An Ode to Sinks

Oh, sinks.

How I love your deep basins,

your running water —

both hot and cold.

How I appreciate your rubber drain catch,

collecting all the food scraps

and the little annoyances in life.

How I miss your constant supply  of water,

low pressure and high.

Oh, sinks.

The underappreciated feature of the kitchen.

Okay, okay. You get the point.

I miss having a sink.

There are a lot of little adjustments we have to make on the road, whether it’s using a cooler instead of a refrigerator, or having to shower with sandals. But, more than anything, I miss the kitchen sink.

In the meantime, we have these handy guys to help us out:

collapsible sinks, outdoor sinks, portable sinks
Our portable, collapsible outdoor sinks. I like to call them Baby Blue and Teal Tina.

These are a couple of collapsible sinks that we found on Amazon for a pretty good deal. Plus, they come in different colors – fun! No, they don’t replace a standard kitchen sink, but they fold up nicely and seem fairly sturdy. They have definitely taken home the “Camping Tool of the Week” award a few times. (In case you’re wondering, the award does go to a vote and yes, it must be unanimous.)

We also recently received this collapsible sink as a gift, but we haven’t had a chance to use it yet. We’re excited to try it out! I’ll submit our review at a later date.

The downside to these sinks is that they can get a little stinky if they don’t air out properly. Oftentimes we use them and hit the road shortly after, shoving them in their stuff sacks while still damp. Bear country also poses a bit of a problem with these, since we can’t leave them to air out while we’re away from camp or sleeping – dish soap is no match for covering up food scents when it comes to bears.

Nevertheless, I’m confident in saying that the $17 we spent on these two sinks was probably some of the best money we’ve spent on this trip.

I still miss my kitchen sink, though. ♥
